Once a Guardian has been appointed, their responsibility is to assure that the provisions have been made for the person’s care and comfort. This would include their daily meals, healthcare and social requirements. Although the Guardian can provide consent on medical needs, they cannot give consent on medical needs that would violate the person’s religious or moral beliefs.
In Minnesota, there is a requirement that the Guardian files a report of the person’s well being to the court on an annual basis. The court can also request an update or report at any point where the Guardian will need to abide by that request. The report provided to the court must contain information on the person’s current health (mental & physical), social conditions, living arrangements, educational, vocational and other services that have been provided to the person. It is also important that the Guardian provides a recommendation of what is needed to continue the guardianship.
